Income

Retirement benefits

Monthly payments for people who worked about 10 years. You can start at 62, but waiting raises your payment for life.

Spousal benefits

A husband, wife or former spouse can get up to half of the worker’s full benefit, even with little or no work history.

Survivor benefits

A widow or widower can get up to 100% of the late spouse’s benefit. Divorced spouses married 10+ years can qualify too.

SSI

A monthly payment for people 65 and over, or blind or disabled, with very low income and savings. It often comes with Medicaid and food help.

Health and drug costs

Medicare overview

Health insurance for people 65 and over and some younger people with disabilities. Sign up on time to avoid lifelong penalties.

Medicare Part A

Covers hospital stays, skilled nursing care after a hospital stay, and hospice. Most people pay no premium.

Medicare Part B

Covers doctors, outpatient care and preventive services. The standard premium is set each year; higher incomes pay more.

Medicare Part D

Prescription drug plans from private companies. Yearly out-of-pocket drug costs are capped, and plans can be changed each fall.

Medigap basics

Private insurance that pays deductibles and the 20% Original Medicare leaves you to pay. The best time to buy is the 6 months after you get Part B at 65.

Extra Help

Lowers Medicare drug plan premiums, deductibles and copays for people with limited income and savings. Many eligible people never apply.

State and local help

Many programs, such as help paying Medicare costs, food help and property tax relief, depend on your state or county. State guides are being added, starting with the largest states. See states
